Roger
Sadly, due to his rapid decline Roger did not have time to explain the inner workings of his website or grant access to his computers but huge thanks go to Mac that we have managed to eventually get this updated. Roger had left a will which indicated that he would like his ashes scattered in Orokawa Bay where he had scattered his wife Susan (Sue) in 2020. In December 2025 I was able to honour this wish and travelled to New Zealand to do this. Carrying Rogers ashes around the world was a bizarre experience which saw us upgraded (only premium economy but nevertheless an upgrade!) but as we flew via the USA the ashes were continuously scanned and swiped and sniffed by dogs! In an epic voyage that Roger would have been proud of we travelled the length and breadth of New Zealand from the top of North Island and around the South Island over a three-week trip. Stopping off in Orewa we met Sue's lifelong friend Terri and husband Byron who kindly gave us a lovely lunch before we set off for Katikati where we met Sue's sister Maryanne and husband Fred. They expertly hosted us and fed us Roger's favourite steak on the BBQ as well as a wonderful early Christmas dinner and showed us around the local sites of Mount Manganui and Katikati Bird Garden. We were very grateful for the time we spent with them, to get to know them and learn more of Sue's childhood and her family in New Zealand.

Roger's Final Journey

On the 21st of December we drove from Katikati to Waihi with Maryanne and Fred and met up with Kelly and Dave Cooke who had been Roger and Sue's neighbours and were incredibly kind and helpful to both Roger and Sue during Sue's illness and supporting Roger afterwards when they took him to the pub quiz and drank Harvey Wall bangers together! The Funeral Party as shown in the photo below were from back left Sue's brother in law Fred, Dave (friend and neighbour), Matilda, Tom, front left Maryanne (Sue's sister), Kelly (friend and neighbour who helped care for Sue) and me.

Waihi Beach

We set off from Waihi Beach on a short hike wikiloc description of walk and met an ex All Black rugby player enroute (no idea about rugby so could not tell you who he was but recognised by the group), I work from home and am incredibly unfit consequently lagging behind the Cookes and Fred and Maryanne! Dad would not be impressed!

Here are some videos we took of the walk from Waihi Beach to Orokawa Bay:

We arrived at the beautiful Orokawa Bay, and this immediately felt the right place for us to leave my Dad as I had worried that I would not want to do this. Roger was raised a Christian, but I am not sure he was a believer anymore as his funeral service and Sue's were non-denominational. I hope that they are together, at peace in that bay in the Pacific ebbing and flowing with the tide and it helps to visualise that beach when I think of him and Sue.
